From Advocacy to Action

Transition advocates help promote discovery, generate insight, and clarify purposeful action steps to improve the quality of life for individuals going through life transitions and to help them adapt, create and implement effective choices.

“There are ten thousand ways to belong to life and fight for your time”

NISE DA SILVEIRA

Most individuals dealing with mental, physical and/or cognitive symptoms need guidance in navigating the difficult decisions they need to make as it relates to work, school, relationships and just day to day situations. They need someone who is solution oriented, knowledgeable, resourceful, and compassionate to help them see the options they have in reaching their goals.  For example, trauma, anxiety, depression, thought disorder, attention deficit or impulsivity, can create confusion and sometimes they hijack the brain's cognitive ability and stamina affecting one's decisions.

We Can:

  • Identify feasible, practical goals to obtain emotional, physical and cognitive balance.

  • Understand the impact of a life transition and identify healthy coping strategies.

  • Navigate the complex network of providers and determine if ones you are using can collaborate with one another.

  • Identify barriers/obstacles to goals and recommend strategies to overcome them.

  • Create an individualized plan based on personal circumstances and opportunities.

Interventions

Psychological interventions are designed to foster healthy emotions, attitudes and habits. Individuals may have numerous health care providers, including a therapist, psychiatrist, primary care physician and nutritionist. Each provider may have a unique treatment plan to help understand and treat issues and conditions. An intervention conducted by the advocate may occasionally be necessary, especially when an individual needs help to regain the capacity to take action that previously seemed impossible due to irrational thoughts, emotional reasoning, cognitive distortions, fear of failure, self -sabotaging behavior/thoughts and/or other factors. The intervention consists of goals for change, a step-by-step action plan, consequences of inaction, and accountability to family/community supports.

Conflict Resolution

Individuals are typically not in isolation and their family/friends and support groups may be involved in their healing or recovery. When there is conflict and dispute among the members, a third impartial advocate can help resolve conflicts and establish agreement. For example, in cases of divorce where someone can mediate between the parties, our approach could be to:

  • Prioritize goals

  • Set appropriate time to discuss and debate each category

  • Set discussion parameters to ensure everyone gets a fair chance to voice their opinion, questions, or concerns

  • Understand individual’s background and circumstances as it relates to the goals

  • Establish trust and respect and safe environment of privacy

  • With respect to emotions try to help individuals focus on rational solutions and reduce ineffective arguments

  • Make thorough notes on points of agreement

  • When necessary consider lawyer inputs and question

  • Create a document of agreed items

Goli is one of the best out there. She has helped me in numerous ways & showed me many times that she genuinely cares about my well being & how to reach my goals. She has gone the extra mile many times to ensure I got the resources I needed. Not only is she genuine but she is caring & knows how to ask all the right questions to get your mind to dig deep. The depth & length she goes to find out the root causes shows how dedicated she is to her work as a mentor & therapist. I have gained so much knowledge while working with her & feel that she has contributed highly to my life as it is today. She helped me find the path I wanted to be on & helped me with many other steps along the way. She is an amazing listener & created a safe environment where I felt like I could tell her anything and everything. I HIGHLY recommended her, you won’t go wrong.

I started working with Goli a few months ago after she was recommended to me by a psychiatrist.  She has been immensely helpful in assisting me with my anxiety and returning to the workforce.  Goli started by setting up a daily planner for me, which was incredibly useful and completely changed around my day to day life.  Goli is very responsive and willing to listen to me.  I always find our sessions very productive and I leave the sessions with something new to take away.

After setting up the daily planner and helping me with techniques to assist in handling my anxiety, Goli recently has been helping me find a job and reintegrate back into the workforce.  When I first met with Goli, I made it clear that getting back to work was one of my main goals in working with her.  Goli has helped me learn about job offerings that I was not aware of before speaking with her.  Also, she has used her resources to put me in touch with a firm to help me look for jobs.  Goli has been immensely with my job search and without her help I would still be stuck in limbo looking for jobs and worrying about my future in the workforce.
